TV:Top 7 Round 2. Jessica was great. I'm starting to hate the judges.

by Louie Ross Perez

I wasn't able to put my views on last week's performance and the most talked about elimination. Boracay is the place to be that weekend and I was there.  I just watched the performances and clips of the show through youtube. My two cents about last week. I think the elimination was just staged by the producers of the show. Jessica is nowhere near the bottom three, but the production wanted to put hype to the show who's been losing audiences for the past few years because of other singing competitions and great series on American TV. They also want to use the save to give the show a more exciting exposure.  Nigel Lythgoe ( Producer) and Ryan Seacrest tweeted that there will be a shocking elimination hours before the show. And that put doubts on me. The question now is, did the save actually helped Jessica or it will hurt her in the next eliminations? Let's see.

Tonight, the contestants were tasked to sing billboard hits for the past ten years and old soul songs. I will go directly with my evaluations, but before that. I think the intro of the show, pertaining to elimination of Jessica last week was just too much. And the pose of the contestants after that intro is incredibly corny.

Hollie - This time Hollie showed why she is in the top 7. She sang Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" pretty decently. This is the first time that I saw Hollie feeling the song, but she's not yet there. She needs to work more, especially in her pitches. She's losing them in couple of her phrases. All of the judges loved it, but Randy gave his criticism on the pitches, that was good of him, but as he always does, give criticisms then praise the contestant in the end. Lame!

On her second song,  "Son Of A Preacher Man". I agree Hollie is better this week compared to her completely rehearsed performances she's been giving the past few weeks. But she is overrated. Yes it was better, but not a moment, not as great as the judges want to convey.

Colton -  "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga. It's very obvious, Colton wanted to steal the show. With the red hair, red pants, metal style like James Durbin. And making that very obvious makes me feel he's not feeling the song, he just wants to make a scene and appeal to her female fanbase. Showmanship was great but I am not sure if the "Little Monsters" liked it.

His soul song is "September" by Earth Wind and Fire. I must say, the version was really corny! Even if it's a different version, in my head, it's still the original version that's playing and I'm like in a retro party and waiting for that song to play. The judges were correct, it's the wrong song. Very very wrong. So wrong. Randy said he should do some Lil Wayne and put his own twist to it. Lil Wayne? Seriously??? Does he sing soul? Is he alive when the genre was at its heights? Come on, Randy!

Elise -  This girl for me has the most interesting voice and technique compared to all the contestants and I feel that she's being underrated by the voters. I think America just don't get her, that's why she's always in the bottom three. Her first song is No One by Alicia Keys. She did her thing, the voice, the runs, the technique and it was a nice performance, not great though. She was commended by the judges which she deserved.

Her second song is "Let's Get It On". She did it decently and seductively. I just realized that Elise is the only grown up woman in the roster. She's 29. And she perfectly used that in the song. She was on pitch, showed her power. I just don't understand J. Lo and Randy. J. Lo said in her first song that she like Elise because she's natural at "letting go", but now she's criticizing Elise on her emotions almost on all her performances. How did this lady ended up being a judge?

Philip- "You Got it Bad" by Usher to be sang by Philip is really a bold move. But guess what, it worked. The band was great, the arrrangement was superb, but what I am unsure of is,  if the singing was great enough for the competition. It's still a singing competition and not an arrangement competition. Just saying. But you know I predict that he will be safe because he has a solid fan base and hasn't done anything to displease them.

His second song though, "In The Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett is too screamy for me. It's like he's shouting at the audience. I'm not sure if he's still singing. He's like a guy who's singing in videoke, shouting to get a score of 100%. Sorry to the fans, but that's what I think about this performance.

For my views on the next contestants, I will do them differently because I have the same comments in both of their songs.

Jessica Sanchez -  Her voice was perfect for the songs and she sang them with angst and determination. She should be safe. As almost everyone wonder, why judges criticized Jessica even if the performances were great. In my own opinion, they are aware that giving Jessica all the praises will be too much for the voters to handle. They may not vote because of confidence that she will surely be safe. They are also aware that the "save" may backfire on Jessica because the fans of the other contestants were offended when Randy said that Jessica is the best in the competition. They have to strategize, because the way I see it, Randy wants a Jessica-Joshua finale.

Skylar Laine - I must say after this night, Skylar proved to me that she's the dark horse in this competition. She might win this whole thing if she continues to perform like what she did tonight. She's the only country singer in this season, and as we all know, country singers have a solid fan base. She's charming, she's fiery. But I don't know if it's just me, I think her singing is kinda nasal and screamy at times, just saying.

Joshua Ledet - Church singing all the way. I'm not saying it's bad but this might hurt thim because he's doing the same thing over again. We already know that he can sing well, he can do adlibs and all that but as the competition is nearing the finale, I'm getting kinda bored in his performances. Also, the question that's running in my mind is that, if he has a future in the current music industry? Does his style now has a place in the market? It's for you to answer.

Now prediction time. It's kinda hard to predict now, but my predictions are Hollie, Colton and Elise. And I strongly think that Elise will go home.

Till tomorrow!

TV: AI Eliminations Review:Hair, Falsetto and J. Lo! Bye Deandre!

by Louie Ross Perez

I got the bottom three right and I also got what I wanted! I think as of now everyone knows that it was Deandre Brackensick who got eliminated in American Idol tonight. Yes! It's about time. Jimmy Iovine got it right, telling the judges that they were wrong by overrating Deandre's performance last night. The producers should really put him in the judges table to give a brighter light to America when voting. But if you will notice even with all the compliments and "great" "beautiful" "in it to win it" words given to him, he still went home. Pia Toscano was also eliminated last year even with the great compliments but Deandre is a different case. Pia was good and very popular at that time in the competition that her fans went overconfident that they didn't vote that night. In my opinion, Deandre, even with good reviews by the judges, went home due to the following reasons:

1) His performances are kinda forced. He wanted to be someone that he's not as of now. He thought that his falsetto is his loaded gun, you can see it in his face when he delivers them. But sorry, he's just not there yet. He has to practice more and discover what kind of artist he wanna be. Practice the falsetto before pulling it of. You're not one of the BEE GEES dude! They rock. Listen to them and take notes.

(How Deep is your Love by the BEE GEES via youtube.com)

2) His hair is irritating. The movement is not natural. He really flips them to get attention that distracts me from listening to him. Well, you can't blame him, his hair is like his ID on Idol. No one has a hair like that on Idol. It's really not the hair, it's the the way he used it. His using it obviously instead of coming out naturally. I can't believe I'm talking hair right now. Maybe if he whipped it like the Willow Smith, it could have been a different story. Watch her perform "Fireball" Live on X Factor.

(Willow Smith in X Factor)

3) And lastly, J. Lo. She's not just the most credible judge to believe. She pushes her favorites to the voters too much. First is who she calls "JER BEAR" who had been eliminated and was not saved too by the judges and now Deandre. It could work to his advantage, but this time it didn't. Maybe if it's Simon who told me to vote for Deandre or Jimmy Iovine, he has a shot. But J.Lo who's responsible for the debut of the cheesy word GOOSIES on Idol, is not yet there. But I love her in the American Music Awards not as a singer but as a dancer. Watch her performance:

Well, that's it for now, till next week. It'll be interesting who will go home, the performances will be critical. Let's see.

TV: American Idol Top 8 Performance Recap - First After a Long While

buddytv.com
by:Louie Ross Perez

I have not written in a while and it's a pleasure to be back and write about the performances in American Idol. I've been wanting to be a judge and kick out Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson out of their chairs. I'm not a singer nor a musician but I like watching singing competitions and listening to music as a whole.

The following are my feedback for the performances tonight of the Top 8:

Deandre Brackensick - Deandre started low and starting a promise of natural singing, and I thought that's a great idea because I'm getting sick of the falsettos. But after a few seconds he went back to his old habit then low key then falsetto again. I hope Deandre will stop doing that and concentrate on real singing. I have to to admit that this was a better performance from him than the other weeks and I understand the judges praising his performance but they tend to exaggerate things and I hate it. 2 stars for me

Elise Testone - I love her voice and I think she has the best voice in the competition but tonight when singing "I Wanna Know What Love Is" by Foreigner, I think she was lost in a street she's never been to. Steven said it's was good but the song choice wasn't great and J.Lo who sugarcoats everytime said it was good but not right in some spots. This time, I have to agree with Randy, Elise was pitchy. But she still nailed Adele's One and Only and she was the best last week so please give her a chance.I don't want her to go this week, but I think she'll be in danger. 2.5 stars

Philip Phillips - I think this guy will break hearts of some hopefuls that a girl will win this season. Philips is wearing his staple pale colored shirt and a polo and of course he brought his guitar, what's different now is he's playing with his brother.  He sang "That's All" by Genesis. What can I say, he plays and sings with his heart and you would really feel the music. I'll say that I'm surprised he obeyed his mentor's advise to stop playing the guitar when it comes to the bridge of the song and make some eye contact to the audience and it worked. I felt like he connected more with the audience. Of course the judges loved him, and this was the first good performance of the night. 3.5 stars

Joshua Ledet - He's really a great singer. I love how he performs with a whole lotta soul. I love his performance, so much passion and technique. The judges loved him but why am I getting this feeling it will be hard for him to win. Maybe it's how the America voted for the last few seasons. I hope they vote better this time so Joshua can score a spot in the final. Because he deserves it. 4.5 stars

Jessica Sanchez - she has shown that she got the voice, she got the swag, she got the moves. But one think she has to show...originality. No doubt she has performed every song really great technically. It's just that she's not putting her own twist to it. "How Will I Know" was sang by Whitney Houston the same as "I Will Always Love You' and Jessica sang it the way Whitney sang them. Come on, give us something new. But if I will evaluate the performance, singing after Joshua, my rating is 3.5 stars. Watch her performance below from youtube.

Hollie Cavanagh - Poor Hollie. Although she was being praised by the judges because of her big voice, but everytime I watch her I feel like she is so rehearsed. There's no feeling within the song. It's like she's thinking the next note instead of the next word, if you know what I mean. Tonight, it's awkwardess all over the place. She's like a toddler being forced by her mother to perform "Flashdance" in the talent portion of a beauty pageant at her school. 2 stars

Colton Dixon - Mr. Skinny Jeans sang "Time After Time" by Cindy Lauper. Although I didn't really like the version just the way the judges overrated it, but this is what Jessica should do next time. Change the arrangement and make it her own. Eventhough it's a bit whiny, it's still a decent job. Making him look current and saleable. And why am I getting this feeling that Ryan is flirting with Colton? Just saying. 3 stars

Skylar Laine - While I was writing this, my brother is beside me and commenting that Skylar's voice is irrirating. I agree with him sometimes, but I think that's what makes her interesting, her voice.  And performing Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings" is kinda refreshing to me. She showed that she's not just a country singer, but she has power vocals too. 3 stars

Also they performed duets tonight. Here are my thoughts:

Colton and Skylar - not bad. But I think there's no chemistry between the two of them. They should not be paired next time. But the singing is not bad. Good cover of a Kenny Rogers' song.

Hollie and Deandre - just awful. I hope Deandre will go home. I don't want to see his hair moving anymore. I 'm tired of it. Hollie is making some awkward dance moves. It's like you're watching your two friends, singing in a karaoke,  getting rid of some hangover from a Red Horse night out. Just awful.

Elise and Philips - Elise gained herself back in this duet. I hope that voters will reconsider her after this performance. I heard that Philips is having some health problems lately and it's kinda showing in his performances. The duet was great and I think it made the night more special

Joshua and Jessica - J. Lo said it's a dream pair and she was right. The two belted the song out and it was great. The two are undeniable the best singers in the competition and I think they will get pretty far in this season.

That's it for now. My bottom three is Deandre, Hollie and either Elise or Colton. As much I would like Deandre to go home but because J.Lo is building him up so much, I think it's Hollie. Not Elise, please.
